Years in the making, I finally recorded an audio version of the essay that people have been asking for. Honestly, it felt great. I’ve come to appreciate how these pieces, when done well, take on a life of their own out in the world.
This is the best example.
As I explain in this episode, people have taken this text and made it their own. Incorporated it into their training, racing, and reflecting on the marathon journey.
It’s not as though I have a copyright on “doesn’t owe you anything,” but when I see the phrase used in the marathon context, I take a kernel of satisfaction that I’ve pushed the conversation about the thing I adore in a good direction.
Please listen, share, and subscribe if you’re inclined.
4k & counting!
This list recently passed 4,000 subscribers! Though it’ll likely dip back below that arbitrary threshold once I publish this piece, since each time I email a handful of people are reminded that they’re here and decide to leave. It’s a hilarious truth that, in 2025, email is still the most direct way to stay connected.
THANK YOU for reading, following along, and sharing this work with others who you believe will also gain some value.
So far, and for the foreseeable future, this is an unpaid and unsponsored space to share ruminations on running and life.
I don’t have plans to begin publishing on a set schedule. The book I’m working on demands so many hours that any additional essays are purely opportunistic as they strike me.
Running update: I’m still injured.
I’ve received many notes of support from all of you. All I can say is that I’m healing a little bit each week. Nothing’s guaranteed. All I ask is that, if you’re able to run, please find a bit of peace out on the road for me. It’s truly a gift.
Thank you for all your support, friends.
Cheers to the miles ahead,
Peter
Congratulations on surpassing 4k! I'm going to listen to your audio essay now. New sub! Getting you closer to 5k
It’s very odd ( funny) I love running but cannot relate . For instance never thought about backing out day of the race . I’m guessing you don’t work with your hands .
